BROWNSVILLE, Texas (October 12, 2017) – On Thursday, October 12, 2017, Brownsville City Manager Charlie Cabler announced his retirement – effective immediately – after 39 years of public service.

Cabler served as Brownsville City Manager since September 2004. Prior to being appointed City Manager in 2004, Cabler served as Interim City Manager and Assistant City Manager.

Cabler first joined the City of Brownsville as a Probationary Officer with the Brownsville Police Department in October 1978, later serving as Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Commander of various divisions, including Fiscal Management, Uniformed Services, Support Services and Professional Standards Command.

“I am eternally grateful to have learned so much from the community that I was afforded the opportunity to serve…” said Cabler. “There is no greater truth in public service than to accept that we must consider and incorporate wisdom and ideas from those whom we took an oath to serve. This is a belief that has guided me and informed me from the very beginning of time.”

“I look forward to continuing to contribute to our community in private life and doing what I can to help build upon our city’s growth and the investment we have made in our greatest asset – our citizens,” Cabler added.

“Mr. Cabler has been a great asset to our community,” said Brownsville City Commissioner At-Large “A” Cesar de Leon. “We wish him the best in the next stage of his life.”

“I would like to thank Mr. Cabler for 39 years of service to the community,” said Brownsville City Commissioner At-Large “B” Rose M. Z. Gowen. “I wish him nothing but the best as he moves forward.”
