BROWNSVILLE, Texas (December 23, 2016) – The City of Brownsville Engineering Department was awarded $139,044 in capital grant funding from the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation (BCIC) for a custom-built stormwater camera system.

The stormwater camera system includes: a 2017 Chevrolet Express 35, an IBAK Stormwater Camera System, and WinCan VX inspection software.

The IBAK Stormwater Camera System is equipped with a Pan, Tilt and Zoom Camera and an inclinometer for pipes as small as 6 inches and as large as 60 inches.  The operating system, affixed to the 2017 Chevrolet Express 35, depicts live footage of stormwater system internal components via the camera and 1,000 feet of mainline cable.

Along with identifying defects that were previously inaccessible, the stormwater camera system will assist Engineering Department staff in pinpointing potential stormwater system issues through the use of GPS locations. In addition, the stormwater camera system will allow for digital storing of visual recordings.

“The IBAK Stormwater Camera System is a crucial first step towards developing a complete digital inventory of our stormwater system via pipeline, manhole, inlet and outfall inspections,” said Brownsville City Engineer Carlos Lastra. “Thanks to the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation and Capital Improvement Plan funding, the City of Brownsville may further enhance its drainage efforts for the benefit of the entire community.”

“The BCIC is happy to see this project at full fruition,” said BCIC Executive Director Rebeca Castillo. “The project will help the City of Brownsville's Engineering Department address current flooding issues in our city. We strongly believe that this project will further enhance the quality of life in our community  for years to come."
